Simplicity November 1972

Simplicity November 1972

Let's roll back the calendar pages to November of 1972 and see what's happenin'!

Simplicity 5185/5308

November 1972 was all about knits!  They put the "pick-a-knit" guide right on the cover!  Now, personally.. my sewing machine hates sewing knits!  But all of these looks are really cute.. maybe I can talk my machine into it?  This jumper is particularly cute with it's interesting pocket detail.

Here are some similar patterns from team members:

1.)  Simplicity 8026 from Keepsakes Studio
2.)  Simplicity 9567 from Erika With A K
3.)  McCall's 2901 from Purple Plaid Penguin

Simplicity 5294 / 5286 / 5294

New for 72... how about a dolman sleeve?  The middle pattern looks very 80s to me.  The high-waisted skirt on the right is definitely in again!  The left side dress is classic... You can wear it now.

Here's some dolman sleeve patterns you can make today!

1.)  Vogue 1513 (By Heim) from So Vintage on Etsy
2.)  Beehive Knitting Book 810 from Redcurlz's
3.)  McCall's 9378 from Sissy's Patterns

Simplicity 5317 / 5297 / 5299 / 5296

Fancywork has Simplicity 5297 in stock!  It's so cute!

5317 in the short version looks a little .. German to me?  I love the high-waisted maxi-skirt look, too. And those granny gowns.. I'm actually not sure how I feel about granny gowns.

Here's some similar patterns:

1.)  Simplicity 9763 from We Are Vintage Sewing
2.)  Butterick 6450 from Fancywork
3.)  Simplicity 9519 from Redcurlz's
4.)  Vogue 8681 from Jeanie's Shop

Simplicity 5292 / 5324 / 5321 / 5293

This colorful layout is very cute!  These fun outfits are equally stylish today.  I could wear those dresses to the office tomorrow if I wanted to!   The asymmetrical buttons in 5321 look very 80s "New Wave" to me... what do you think?

Retroactive Future has Simplicity 5292 in stock.. from Simplicity's "Designer Fashion" line.

Atomic Regeneration and Knightcloth have Simplicity 5324 in stock... a classic basic dress!

Some more similar patterns:

1.)  Butterick 3740 from Em Sew Crazy
2.)  Simplicity 6442 from Grandma Made With Love
3.)  Vogue 2147 by Galitzine from Sew As It Was Patterns

Simplicity 5185/5308 / 5320 / 5306 / 5298
Instructions on using Simplicity's Knit Picker appear ... it was a new idea, and some people were unfamiliar with the fairly new knit and stretch fabrics.  Anyone could have a comfortable wardrobe that looked attractive, too!

Bluetree Sewing Studio has the versatile 5306 in stock.. make a top and pants, or a maxi skirt.  Every bit as classy now as then!  The skirt could be great for anything from the office to a night at the theatre or special occasion.  And it's very easy!

More similar patterns:

1.)  Simplicity 5372 from Lady Diamond 46
2.)  McCall's 2866 from California Sunset
3.)  Simplicity 9606 from Sandritocat

Simplicity 5307 / 5325/5327 / 5185/5316 / 5316

Playful, colorful, and W-I-I-I-I-D-E pantlegs are the feature of this page!  I love the shoes but I'm not sure about the pants!  I think the yellow and green 5185/5316 is very cute though.  Love those ribbed stockings, too.  I'd wear it. :)

Bluetree Sewing Studio has the double-breasted jacket in stock.  I like the contrast trimming on the jacket.  Pretty neat and tidy .. very yacht-worthy.

Meanwhile, We Are Vintage Sewing has the mod pants (5327) and shirt (5325) in stock.  The pants are unisex!

More similar patterns:

1.)  Simplicity 5143 from People Packages
2.)  McCall's 4907 from Sew Betty and Dot
3.)  Butterick 5045 from Pattern Matters

Simplicity 5331 / 5335 / 5333 / 5336 / 5328

Don't forget the kiddos!  Perfectly sweet outfits and toys for the younger set... every bit as cute as ever!

The matching boys and girls outfits  in 5336 would be perfect for twins.  And matching holiday pajamas are perfect for that Christmas card photo!

1.)  Simplicity 8779 from Frisky Scissors
2.)  Simplicity 9476 from Mbchills
3.)  Style 1221 from Find Crafty Patterns

Simplicity 5321 / 5315

It wouldn't be the 70s without some caftans and muu-muus!  Wow!  Want to stop traffic?  Try 5315. :)

Similar patterns:

1.)  McCall's 5386 from People Packages
2.)  Simplicity 8354 from Vogue Vixens
3.)  Vogue 7360 from Roma's Maison
4.)  Simplicity 7650 Keepsakes Studio

Simplicity 5309 / 5310

The back cover features playful pants and lacy blouses... maybe the one view is suitable for your next Gothic and Lolita outfit?  I like all of these!

1.)  Mail Order A718 from Vintage Needle Finds
2.)  Vogue 1797 from Cloe's Closet
3.)  Simplicity 8117 from Fancywork

=====================================================

Well, that's about all for now!  I do hope you enjoyed it. :)

Let's Do the Twist!

Chubby Checkers’ “The Twist” came out in 1960 and became an international dance craze until The Beatles came out with “Twist and Shout” in 1964. The preferred Twist fashion styles then were still the form-fitting sheath dresses and pencil skirts of the late 50’s, but with a fun, more youthful feel. The little black cocktail dress turned up a lot.

Here are some great little numbers from the Pattern Patter Team.

1. McCall's 6085;  sewbettyanddot
2. McCall's 7245;  DRCRosePatterns
3. McCall's 5658;  CherryCorners
4. Marian Martin 9175;  RebeccasVintageSalon
5. Vogue 4112;  sydcam123
6. McCall's 6571;  Fragolina

Another popular style was pencil or cigarette crop pants with a cute little top.

Check out the plaid crop pants on Jane Mansfield!

Girls still had to wear dresses to school, and pants were considered a little racy, so it was a lot more daring to dance in pants.

Here are some fun patterns if you'd like to make your own "Twist" pants.

 1. Else' of California Precision Pants;  ErikawithaK
 2. McCall's 7248;  ThePatternSource
 3. Simplicity 4487;  pattern memorie
 4. Simplicity 3435;  SelvedgeShop
 5. Simplicity 3703;  Redcurlz
 6. Simplicity 3428;  GrammaMadeWithLove

Full skirt dresses also made a showing, although they were on their way out when "The Twist" was in full swing.

That's Brigitte Bardot in the left photo.

Here are some great full skirt patterns from the early 60's.

1. Simplicity 2646;  Fancywork
2. McCall's 5417;  sandritocat
3. McCall's 5784;  ShellMakeYouFlip
4. Butterick 9563;  SewAsItWasPatterns
5. Advance 3194;  PeoplePackages
6. McCall's 7333;  mbchills

Last, but in no way least, there was beach party "Twist", with girls in the now widely accepted bikinis and enough hairspray to keep that do in place on the outside chance any water touched  it.

Make your own retro bikini with these patterns.

1. Vogue 6490;  BluetreeSewingStudio
2. Simplicity 8785;  Clutterina
3. McCall's 8289;  GreyDogVintage
4. Vogue 6175;  AtomicRegeneration
5. Butterick 3546;  FriskyScissors
6. Simplicity 6547;  RosesPatterTreasury

So, get out those early 60's LP's, put on your dancing shoes (or take your shoes off and wiggle them in the sand), and sew up a wonderful outfit to show off your Twist moves!

Piet Mondrian 1960s Dresses

Piet Mondrian and His Influence on 1960’s Fashion

Piet Mondrian (1870-1944), considered to be the founder of Modern Art was born and raised in the Netherlands. He is most famous for his Color Block series of paintings.  He was also an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement.
I have always loved the Mondrian Dresses of the 1960’s.  I imagine that Yves St. Laurent’s homage to Mondrian’s works would have pleased him immensely.  The design was so popular after St. Laurent introduced it in 1965 that the imitations sprouted out in many forms from dresses to boots. Some of the imitations were from other pattern companies. In 1966 it seemed that every pattern manufacturer had a version of their own.
I Rifled through my pattern leaflet collection and found the following examples from Vogue, McCall’s Simplicity, and Butterick.
To this day, the Mondrian Dress retains its prestigious spot in fashion history. The sewing patterns continue to be popular when available.

McCall’s 8131 is one of my favorites. I have never come across one.
